Every rental needs an electricity account, and many need gas too — you set this up yourself directly with a retailer, since it's not usually included in rent. Wholesale energy prices and available plans vary by state and even by postcode, so the best move is to compare using your actual usage data rather than guessing, especially once you've had a few bills under your belt.

Victoria runs its own comparison tool instead of Energy Made Easy, carrying every generally available electricity, gas and solar tariff in the state.
WA sits outside the National Electricity Market, and residential electricity is sold as a regulated public service rather than through retail competition. Synergy (Perth/SWIS) or Horizon Power (regional WA) publish the tariff directly, rather than it being set via a comparison site. Gas is regulated by the ERA.
Jacana Energy doesn't set prices for residential customers or small businesses under 750 MWh/year — the NT Government sets these rates directly via the annual Electricity Pricing Order, administered by the Utilities Commission.

You'll want an Australian SIM or eSIM as soon as possible for calls, mobile data, and to receive one-time codes for bank and government logins. Most budget mobile brands don't run their own towers — they resell access to Telstra, Optus or Vodafone's network at a lower price, so you can usually get near-identical coverage to the big three telcos for a fraction of the cost.

Most homes connect via the NBN (National Broadband Network), Australia's shared fixed-line broadband infrastructure — you pick a retailer that resells access to it, rather than a network directly. Setup can take one to two weeks, so it's worth ordering as soon as you have a lease, and checking whether bundling internet with your energy plan gets you a discount.
